Although determining the proximity between two objects may seem like a relatively simple task, the process is, in fact, quite complicated. There are many different types of Proximity Detection System (PDS) technologies in operation, each of which operates differently. Furthermore, terminology within this field is not always consistent and information relating to the working principles of these technologies are not always well documented or easily accessible.
This toolkit aims to provide some clarification relating to commonly used PDS technologies. The toolkit consists of an overview of six key PDS technologies and provides a tool to compare these technologies. The tool is intended for a variety of different stakeholders, but we believe that end-users of the PDS technologies will realise the most value.
This toolkit is not an extensive or detailed description and review of PDS technologies, but more of a high-level summary.
The toolkit is meant to be used as an indication or reference point and should be used in conjunction with a more detailed sensor review, PDS testing and simulation tools. This tool is open to the industry and we invite the industry to provide feedback regarding the content in this toolkit.
